Clinical Psychology with Dr Bryany Duggan

Dr Bryany Duggan (nee Cusens) DClinPsych, MPhil, BSc (Hons), CPsychol. HCPC registered.

I am a Chartered Clinical Psychologist with over 17 years experience working with individuals who are struggling with psychological, emotional or behavioural difficulties. With a broad foundation of training in Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) methods, my approach has evolved in conjunction with my own clinical experience and the latest research evidence and is now heavily informed by Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) and Compassion-Focused Therapy (CFT). Where appropriate I incorporate mindfulness and other forms of meditative practice within my approach.

I have extensive experience working within the NHS with chronic health conditions including CFS/ME, fibromyalgia, chronic pain, IBS, post-cancer issues and post-illness adjustment difficulties. I also work with individuals who care for others with long-term health conditions. Additional specific areas of expertise and interest include stress management, addiction-related difficulties, depression (including post-natal), bereavement, trauma, anger-related issues, shame, self-criticism, and anxiety (including health, social and generalised anxiety disorders).

I have a particular interest in using psychological strategies to enable individuals to connect with what is truly meaningful in their lives, working with the emotional and psychological barriers that may impede this. These approaches can be valuable to anyone struggling with disabling levels of anxiety and depression, or feeling lost and disconnected. Some people make significant and sustainable changes within just six sessions, others value longer-term work.

Aside from my clinical work, I am also an experienced researcher and have published articles in peer-reviewed journals across topics such as chronic pain, mindfulness, addiction and substance abuse. I was also involved in the development and evaluation of a CBT manual for therapists in 2003.

I am very happy to discuss your needs in a preliminary telephone call to help you decide whether to book an initial meeting. During our initial meeting we will begin to develop a shared understanding of your situation, discuss the therapeutic approach and consider whether we could work together effectively towards agreed treatment goals. Throughout our work I will make a commitment to create an authentic, compassionate and respectful context in which to explore your difficulties and facilitate meaningful change.
